Description

Blues lovers—if you are looking for a tough, blues-rooted sound, topical lyrics, and the gritty growl of John Kay, then Heretics & Privateers is the album for you!

This album is simply unbelievable! Kay's presence is thick, his voice is strong, and the lyrics seem to speak what's on his mind. As Kay puts it, "We didn't see why you couldn't have music that worked on a gut level but still offered some food for thought." Heretics & Privateers does just that. His harp and guitar are both so smooth and soothing to the ear, but the lyrics offer a gritty view of contemporary life. It makes you consider the reality of things!

John Kay and Steppenwolf have emerged as one of rock's most enduring and respected bands, delivering hard-hitting, personally-charged music for more than three decades. In the late 1960s, Steppenwolf embodied that era's social, political and philosophical restlessness, building an impressive body of edgy, uncompromising rock 'n' roll that retains its emotional resonance more than three decades after the band's formation. Such Steppenwolf standards as Born to Be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, Rock Me and Monster are among rock's most indelible anthems.

Throughout the musical career of John Kay and Steppenwolf, their music has contained a blues presence. Heretics & Privateers is no exception. This album contains a great collection of 12 blues songs just waiting to be played!

Just inside the jacket, John Kay writes: "During the folk music resurgence of the early sixties I crossed this country playing acoustic blues wherever I could make a few dollars, while learning from the innovators (Son House, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Water, etc.) whose performances I experienced in clubs and at events like the Newport Folk Festival. It was there that I first heard the topical songs of Tom Paxton, Richard Farina, Bob Dylan and others. I was strongly affected by the social commentary of their work and by witnessing thousands of people sharing a feeling of solidarity while being galvanized through this music. Since that time, blues and topical lyrics have often woven their way through my song writing, but never more so than in the songs on this recording."

This CD is a must-have for your blues collection!
