Demolition in NYC

Finding the right Demolition Contractor in NYC is no small task. There a literally dozens if not hundreds of contractors to choose from in the NYC area, so how do you choose?

We recently wanted to rebuild our old garage, we thought this would be a simple process since it's just the garage, but NYC Department of buildings had other plans. The demolition permit application process for a demolition permit is the same as if it was a sky scraper. Just for background reference we have zero demolition experience at all, never mind demolition in NYC which is a totally different monster itself.

After combing google to find out how we can go about this “small” project of ours, we found out this work MUST be completed by a fully licensed and insured contractor. So much for a Sunday afternoon with the boys going to town with some sledge hammers.

And so began the search. We tried the usual go to google, but that just lead us to a bunch of yelp pages, google ads, and sites for contractors not even based in NYC. Sure there were local contractors in the map, but many of them didn’t even have a website. So we tried another approach, a friend worked in the construction industry so we figured he might have a suggestion.

He did in fact have a suggestion, a company he sub contracted demo work to on a 2 story warehouse in Queens, NYC Demolition. So we took a look at their website, it wasn’t anything fancy, but it was straight to the point. We liked that, also they outlined the entire permit application process from start to finish, at that point we definitely realized we didn’t want to do it on our own.

So we called them, couldn’t miss the big link with their phone number at the top of the page. Now we weren’t sure what to expect, this was a company demolishing industrial warehouses, would they even want to demo our little garage? After speaking with Jeremy he assured us that no job was too big or too small for them, we scheduled an appointment for them to come look at the garage, which again surprised me they would even do for such a small project.

After looking at the garage they told us it was a walk in the park, in fact the application process would take longer than the actual demo of the garage. For once we weren’t surprised after reading how complicated the process is.

They put together a package for us including all the filing paperwork, demo plans ,engineered drawings, etc. Now we figured the price would be astronomical, remember this is a big company demolishing warehouses, to our surprise it wasn’t too expensive. Considering they are handling the entire process from start to finish, they have more than enough insurance coverage for this project and over 20 years of experience.

None the less we still wanted to shop around, after all as a consumer it only makes sense to make sure you’re getting a good deal right? We called a few other demo contractors in the area to get some quotes to compare. Almost none of the other contractors wanted to come look at the garage they just gave estimates right over the phone. Some higher some lower, some of them offered barely if any insurance coverage. The ones that were higher wouldn’t really budge on the price, and overall didn’t really seem too interested in this small project.

So after doing our due diligence we called Jeremy at NYC Demolitions again, we told him of the other prices we got. Before we could say anything else he told us client satisfaction was their number one priority, after job safety of course. He understood we were ordinary people not a multi-million dollar net worth development company, he said if tightening up their estimate would make us feel more comfortable working with them they’d happily do so. Shocked doesn’t begin to describe our feelings at that moment, we were already certain we wanted to go with them, but no one says no to savings am I right.

We went on to sign the dotted line and start the demolition process on our garage, he wasn’t lying when he said the permit application process would take longer. The entire process went even smoother than we could’ve imagined, no hiccups, no injuries, and almost more importantly no fines. Because as a property owner even with a licensed and insured contractor, those are all your responsibility.

NYC Demolition went above and beyond for us, and we happily refer our friends and family to them. They made us feel like even though we were just demolishing a garage we were still important to them. They were available to answer any questions or concerns we had almost around the clock. If you’re reading this from NYC and you need an amazing Demolition contractor check them out, we highly recommend them if you couldn’t tell by now.
